Remembrance

Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day are the most important dates in our calendar - when we pause as a community to honour those who gave their lives for our freedom.

Honouring the fallen

Every year our branch helps the community mark Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday, with parades, services, and wreath-laying at Pudsey and Farsley Cenotaphs. In the weeks leading up to November, we also support the Poppy Appeal across Pudsey and Farsley, with stalls, collections, and fundraising events throughout October. Together, these efforts ensure that the sacrifice of the fallen is never forgotten and that today’s Armed Forces community continues to receive the support they deserve.

Remembrance Sunday

Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday of November, the closest to Armistice Day. It is the day when communities across the country pause to honour the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community, both past and present.

In Pudsey and Farsley, our branch leads the annual parades and services at the Cenotaphs, bringing together veterans, families, community groups, local schools, and dignitaries. Wreaths are laid, standards are paraded, and the Act of Remembrance is observed, including the two-minute silence at 11am.

These services are a powerful expression of unity and gratitude, ensuring that the memory of those who gave their lives lives on in the heart of our community.

Act of Remembrance

At our services in Pudsey and Farsley, the Act of Remembrance is central to the occasion. It begins with words of reflection, followed by the Exhortation - “They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old…” - read aloud before the sounding of the Last Post.

The community then pauses together in respect and gratitude during the Two Minutes’ Silence, before the Reveille signals the return to daily life, carrying forward the memory of the fallen. Wreaths are then laid at the Cenotaphs by veterans, families, community groups, and dignitaries.

These simple but powerful traditions link us with millions of others across the country, ensuring that the sacrifice of past generations is never forgotten here in Pudsey and Farsley.

Armistice Day

Armistice Day takes place every year on 11 November, marking the moment in 1918 when the First World War came to an end. At 11am, people across the country observe a two-minute silence to honour all those who have served and sacrificed.

In Pudsey and Farsley, our branch leads local commemorations at the Cenotaphs, where veterans, schools, community groups, and residents gather to pause together in respect.

These acts ensure that, more than a century on from the end of the First World War, we continue to remember those who gave their lives - and show our support for today’s Armed Forces community.

The Poppy

The poppy is the enduring symbol of Remembrance and hope for a peaceful future. Inspired by the flowers that grew on the battlefields of the First World War, it represents both the sacrifice of the fallen and the resilience of those who serve today.

In Pudsey and Farsley, our branch helps bring the poppy into the heart of the community each October through the Poppy Appeal. You’ll find our volunteers at stalls, events, and collections across the area - giving everyone the chance to wear their poppy with pride and support the Armed Forces community.

Every poppy worn is a visible reminder that their sacrifice is never forgotten.
